The goal of IBS 555 (along with IBS 556 in the spring semester) is to allow students to develop a solid foundation in biochemistry and cell biology (with a smattering of genetics) such that students will be able to be consumers of primary literature employing biochemical, cell biological, and genetic approaches. Students will be most successful in their careers if they can appreciate and apply to their own research the ideas and results of investigators using a wide variety of approaches and techniques to investigate problems related to those in which they are interested. For example, investigators using functional MRI to study behavioral disorders might become involved in a study of the effects of mutations in the gene encoding the enzyme catechol O-methyl transferase (COMT) on activation of brain areas related to anxiety. To read the relevant literature, these scientists-who live and breathe brain scans but may not own a single pipettor-will need to understand a substantial amount of genetics, protein structural biochemistry, and enzymology. So even if a student intends never again to touch a pipettor, his/her success may well hinge on understanding what pipette jockeys are up to.

Students will be assumed to have a solid working knowledge of the basics of sciences and mathematics that form the foundation of modern biochemical and cell biological studies. The level of knowledge expected is mastery of the major concepts, "facts", tools, and vocabulary typically taught in college introductory sequences.

6. --calculus (only elementary facility with derivatives and integrals)
