报告摘要

Natural polymers—such as proteins, polysaccharides, and lignin—have evolved over millions of years to achieve the sophistication and delicacy observed in their current forms, exhibiting exceptional performance and advanced functionalities. With the increasing urgency for decarbonization and defossilization, there is a strong push to develop high-performance, bio-based alternatives to petroleum-derived products. In this presentation, I will share recent work from my lab - Sustainable Functional Biomaterials Lab at the University of British Columbia, focusing on advanced manufacturing using biomacromolecules. Key topics include the development of rigid and strong nacre-mimetic biocomposites, toughened bio-based hydrogels, elastic and shape-recoverable aerogels, and the additive manufacturing of high-performance cellulose-based structures.

A nature-mimetic design philosophy will be interwoven throughout the discussion of various examples, including insights from spider silk spinning for the development of high-performance gelatin-based hydrogels; the design of high-inorganic-content biocomposites inspired by abalone nacre; antifreezing strategies learned from maple trees, which accumulate sugars in their sap during winter; and lightweight structural designs modeled after the honeycomb-like architecture of wasp nests. In addition to the structural design, I will also discuss the application of these hierarchical materials in emerging fields such as thermal insulation, biological and robotic sensors, and atmospheric water harvesting.
